Creating Grouped Products

The grouped products feature allows products of the same type to be displayed together on the product list, with customers selecting their preferred options directly on the product page.

 Grouped Products

Example, a WebNinja polo shirt might come in 5 colours and 5 sizes; that's 25 individual SKUs. Rather than listing all 25 separately, they're grouped into a single product listing. The customer then selects their required size and colour on the product page.

Product Page Layouts

Grouped products can be displayed in two ways, depending on your template setup and preferences:

Layout 1: Drop-Down Selection

The customer lands on the product page; for example, 'Sparco Arrow+ Racing Gloves', and is presented with drop-down menus to select their Colour and Size. Once both attributes are selected, the price and stock code for that specific SKU are displayed.

Layout 2: Grid

The customer lands on the product page; for example, 'Carded Jobber Drills - Imperial', and is presented with a table showing all available SKUs, with their attributes laid out in a grid for easy comparison and selection.

Both layouts reduce the number of products cluttering your product list and streamline the ordering process for your customers.

Setup

While the underlying concept is the same for most customers, the method for adding data can vary depending on your accounting package and integration type. Each attribute field, such as Colour or Size, is mapped directly from the corresponding product attributes in your accounting software, so in many cases your data will already be flowing through automatically. The steps below cover adding data directly through the product admin area.

Adjust these steps as needed to suit your specific setup. It's also worth noting that Colour and Size are just examples. Other attributes can be added to the matrix alongside them, or may replace them entirely, depending on the products you're grouping.

Adding Your Data

Before getting started, decide on the attributes you'll need for your grouped products matrix. For each group you'll need:

  • A Group Name — this will become the display name for the product on your product list
  • A Primary Product field — this field determines which product the description, main image and other elements will be drawn from.
  • One field for each attribute your products vary by — for example, Colour and Size, though these will differ depending on your products

Once you've confirmed your required fields with us, we'll set them up in the system ready for you to use. Then follow the steps below to start adding your data.

Note that the steps below cover adding data directly through the admin area. If these fields are mapped to your accounting software, you'll manage updates from there instead.

  • Log in to the admin area and navigate to Products/Categories > Products.
  • Find and open one of the products you want to add to a group (search by product code if needed).
  • Select the Additional Fields tab — you'll see your Group Name field, Primary Product field, and any attribute fields we've configured for you.
  • Enter a Group Name — this must be identical across every product in the group, including spacing and capitalisation.
  • Enter the value for your Primary Product field.
  • Enter the relevant value for each attribute field (e.g. Colour, Size, or whichever attributes apply to your products).
  • Save your changes.

Repeat these steps for every product in the group. Once at least two products share the same Group Name, they'll display as a grouped product on your store.

Once at least two products share the same Group Name, they'll automatically display as a grouped product; either as drop-downs or a grid, depending on your template.

Important Note: It's also important to be aware that the grouped products feature will automatically group together any products that share the same product name, so if any of your individual products already share a name they will be grouped together automatically. Additionally, your Group Name must not match any existing product name in your catalogue. Each Group Name needs to be unique to avoid products from different groups being unintentionally merged together.

Summary

Grouped products are a simple but effective way to keep your product list clean and your customers' shopping experience straightforward. Instead of flooding your catalogue with dozens of near-identical listings, you bring them together under a single product with clearly selectable attributes, whether that's size, colour, or any other variation relevant to your business.

The setup is straightforward: assign a consistent Group Name and the relevant attribute values to each product in the group, and WebNinja handles the rest, presenting them either as drop-down selectors or a grid table depending on your template. Once configured, any customer landing on that product page can quickly find and order exactly what they need, without having to sift through multiple listings.
